Geoenvironmental Assessment South Shields – Spire Geotechnical complete phased investigation for a proposed commercial development.
The project includes the transformation of a vacant plot of land into a large commercial development.
Spire Geotechnical were commissioned to assist with preparing a detailed land contamination assessment. Our geoenvironmental assessment South Shields was phased over two investigations.
Phased Investigations
Initially, Spire conducted a Preliminary Risk Assessment in support of a planning submission. Subsequently, the initial Phase 1 Desk Study was used to design a robust and suitably detailed Phase 2 Site Investigation.
The area included a series of joining ground slabs and areas of concrete hardstanding. To limit offsite disposal, the client wanted reuse site-won material at the site. A large volume of crushed concrete would be available to aid the slight reprofiling of the site.
The Phase 2 Site Investigation include a range of methods complimented with a range of laboratory tests. From the Phase 1 Desk Study, the laboratory testing was able to consider several priority contaminants (or contaminants of concern). These ranged from heavy metals, hydrocarbons and asbestos material.

Outcomes
The Phase 2 report was ultimately dual purpose. It was intended to compliment and confirm assumptions made during the initial Preliminary Assessment. The Phase 2 was used to satisfy the related land contamination planning condition. The report was also used to aid overall designs for the site.
