SGL recently collaborate with the councils highway services to investigate land for a new commercial development

Spire regularly collaborate with partnering organisations and contractors. This is normally specific to a geographical area where we are working. For a recent project near Glasgow, SGL have collaborated with the councils laboratory services to conduct our geotechnical survey Glasgow.

Phased Approach

In accordance with PAN33, SGL have completed a phased approach to investigating the sites land contamination and water environment condition. Our Geotechnical Survey Glasgow combined both the geoenvironmental and geotechnical assessments over Phase 1 and Phase 2 reporting stages.

The Phase 1 Preliminary Risk Assessment confirmed that the site lies on the edge of the main coalfield. The initial desk-based assessment ruled out any associated risk from shallow coal mining. The site was potentially at risk from various land contamination sources, including ground gas within the deep made ground to the immediate north of the site.

Intrusive Investigation

The proposed commercial development included the civil designs for a proposed extension to the existing unit. SGL captured geotechnical design information from its analysis of the existing yard, supporting soils and land adjacent to the existing unit. A series of insitu and laboratory tests were completed to inform the technical reporting.

The ground conditions were interesting, with varying depths to rock deposits, made up ground, and thin glacial till. Therefore, settlement was carefully considered as the development would be bridging over various soil and rock deposits.

A series of geotechnical techniques were used to complete the investigation. This included cores, boreholes, trial pits and CBR tests. Consequently, the purpose of the testing was to target the upper soils and rock to measure their respective strengths.

Design information was captured to progress the construction details of the project. As a result of the investigation, Spire provided the contractor with sufficient information for both materials management and offsite disposal.
